Dinner at Formosa, Sunway Pyramid

UPDATE:

Just as I successfully escaped from hell, I was shocked to know that it's now the very last day of April 2013. Time flies. Good evening, readers, I hope you're doing fine!

Many things have happened over the past few days. I was dragged into hell by some of my classmates and lecturers, allowing me to witness how reality would be like. I was terribly stressed out. For two days and two nights continuously, I had quite a mental breakdown. No matter where I went, I cried. I could feel suicidal for a few seconds, shrug everything off, and be depressed later on. I seemed to have one of the worst weeks of my life until I followed some of my dearest people for a day trip to Kuala Kubu Bharu that I was finally relieved.

I know it hasn't ended just yet. At the very least, upon seeking consultations, I have narrowed down to a conclusion that I wasn't at fault, and that I should stop caring for those who are unworthy. I am strong enough to get it through until the end.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Taiwanese cuisine seems to be something rather uncommon in Malaysia. Even if it is, the food quality may not be guaranteed, the portion size may be disappointing, or they may not offer anything that I truly fancy. For instance, I would never suggest XXL Crispy Chicken by Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks for its disgusting, weird, and smelly taste. Formosa, though, is so far the only one that I would highly recommend to give it a good try apart from Arisan at Taylor's University. Despite being operated by a group of foreigners, the food and services never fail to satisfy me during every visit.

On a side note, I have recently found out that Taiwan was historically known as "Ilha Formosa" by the Portuguese, which it literally means beautiful island.

On that particular night, Don and I did not choose our usual set meals, but we wanted to have more than what our tummies could handle. Formosa offers a very wide selection of choices of set meals to be picked. Some of them may come with or without a cup of drink of your choice, and some may or may not include a bowl of rice. It's totally flexible in a way!

However, unless I need some cold drink to calm myself, I wouldn't prefer to have their Grass Jelly Milk Tea. It tasted like a cup of drink filled with flavoring essence.

Each of us had a bowl of Braised Sauce Rice as usual, and added Braised Egg and Braised Taufu at RM3.00 in total. The first bite had indeed helped to make a life changing decision ever since; I will be sure to order all three of them every single time!

Don preferred their Hot Crispy Chicken while I opted for Taiwanese Salted Chicken to save hassles. Both of them came with soft, tender, and juicy chicken meat covered with crispy outer layer, but cooked in different ways. They're definitely finger licking good! :D

Well, not to worry. The Hot Crispy Chicken wasn't too troublesome to be eaten, in fact. YOU MUST TRY!

Firefly Observation by Homestay Haji Dorani, Sabak Bernam

Part 1: 3 Days and 2 Nights at Homestay Haji Dorani, Sabak Bernam
Part 2: Free and Easy at Homestay Haji Dorani, Sabak Bernam
Part 3: Buffet Dinner at Homestay Haji Dorani, Sabak Bernam

I could easily score 300% for my overly excellent procrastination. My previous trip to Bali with my ex-classmates a year ago is still yet to be blogged, yet I am here talking about something else that took place in October 2012. The trip was not anywhere near impressive. It's just the people whom I traveled with that truly mattered. Anyway, for your own review in case you somewhat missed it, here is a brief introduction about my 3 days and 2 nights at Homestay Haji Dorani.

As the title suggests, our first night was spent on a boat controlled by the local guide, and floated along an unknown, pitch black river to observe fireflies. Frankly, I couldn't even name the river or the place where we boarded the boat. Transportation to and from Homestay Haji Dorani was mentioned to be provided in the itinerary, but we were eventually told to drive to the destination instead. It wasn't a pleasant drive, I would say. The guide literally sped along the way to the extent that I had to risk getting into an accident on roads that I was never familiar with, while trying to tailgate them at my best. The jetty was a place surrounded by trees by the way, managed by the locals.

P/S: The credits for the photos shared in this particular blog post go to Fathu and me myself.

As usual, we were required to put on our life jackets for safety purposes before we crossed the dangerously designed wooden bridge to board our boat. From the destination and its surrounding to this part of the trip, I was still worried about scams. It could be!

Soon, we departed in search of fireflies. In order to protect the fireflies by all means, flashlights and everything that could possibly cause any forms of harm to the little insects must be off for the moment. Video cameras were no longer helpful then. Torchlight were also best to be off at the same time for the similar reasons, and only the guide's was on.

Fathu switched her digital camera to night mode and shot a short video to briefly talk about our situation for our travelogue, which the video gave us the creeps. It resulted in grey-ish green faces of us with dark surroundings, just like the photo above. Hah!

It's the firefly on her palm! Usually black or brown with elongate bodies, fireflies belong to the family, Lampyridae. According to Debbie Hadley, their larvae live in the soil, under tree bark, and even in swampy areas. They simply love to be in moist, dark places!

We didn't spend a very long time on firefly observation. It's an activity that allows you to look at natural Christmas trees after all, even though I will never deny the beauty of it. We returned to our chalet as soon as we arrived at the jetty, and it was yet another scary journey again.

That's basically how our first day at Homestay Haji Dorani was spent. :D

Late Dinner at Steven's Corner, Old Klang Road

Blogging about Steven's Corner awakens me to the fact that Don has never brought me to this restaurant in the day, but merely after my usual dinner time. His intention of feeding me late at night while I diet is so much clearer now! :P

If you have never heard of Steven's Corner, it is now the moment for you to have an overview about this famous spot for people, especially youngsters, to hang out in the midnight. Read the articles here! The incident happened in August 2010, involving the then boss of the restaurant and an old man who owned the shop beside Steven's Corner. I'm not sure how it was eventually, but Steven's Corner is still operating as usual until today, and it is always crowded with humans despite the case.

Back in 1977, Steven's Corner was then just a little mamak stall at the corner of the road in Overseas Union Garden (OUG), run by a husband and wife serving basic mamak food such as Roti Canai and Mee Goreng. Today, after 29 years of hard work and dedication, Steven's Corner has become what it is today, a generic mamak hang out for the Klang Valley mamak craze.

In 1985, the mamak stall is officially registered under "Sri Komalah Restaurant" and business hour has been extended to 24 hours, 7 days a week, being the first of its kind in the region. Due to the overwhelming responds from their loyal customers in Klang Valley area, they have catered to another branch in Pandan Indah in 20 December 1997 and a special dedication of a Pool Club called SSC Pool Club in 20 July 2000.

Here in Steven's Corner, they assure their customers with the best food and services, with over 100 staffs working under the two restaurant. The ingredients used for their food are their own concoction, and their spices are specially imported from India. From time to time, they will come up with additional new dishes to add on to the varieties and currently, their most sell-able dishes are the fried items such as the "Burung Puyuh", Nasi Lemak Special, Tosai Tisu, Chicken Chop and Roti Bakar, to name a few.

In April 2007, they opened their 3rd outlet in Setapak. Furthermore, their catering team now operates under Steven's Corner Caterers Sdn. Bhd. – Copied and edited from StevensCorner.com.my

I usually visit Steven's Corner when I stay overnight at Don's house, which also means I rarely drop by the restaurant. Yet, I will always be sure to return for their Roti Telur Cheese without having to go through their menu to try something else. It is literally Roti Canai, a type of Indian-influenced flat bread famous in Malaysia, filled with egg and cheese, giving you a springy flavor as you chew a mouthful of it. Om nom nom!

Don preferred to have something heavier that night, as he was in hunger. Thus, he ordered Cheese Naan. For your information, naan is quite similar to Roti Canai, but they don't look the same. Naan is a leavened, oven-baked flat bread usually cooked in a tandoor, whereas Roti Canai is often flattened, oiled, folded, and fried on a pan. Needless to say, Don's Cheese Naan was just as finger licking good as it seems from the picture above.

Every dinner at Steven's Corner that I had was extremely sinful indeed, for the amount of oil I had consumed and the fact that I tended to go to bed before digestion. Like I said previously, I was never brought to the restaurant during the day! Albeit so, I would highly recommend you to order Roti Telur Cheese should you drop by Steven's Corner at OUG, Old Klang Road one day. It's definitely worth a try!

Brunch at iKar Restaurant, Kepong

Established in 2003, iKar Restaurant was set up by a husband and wife in a humble and quiet neighborhood of Jalan Ipoh. Initially, they started off with some simple local cuisines like fish balls or pork and seafood noodles, mainly to cater for the surrounding office crowd then.

Soon, they realized the potential of specializing in fish head noodles. In order to make this delicious cuisine interesting to indulge in the everyday life of the people, they created some 12 types of delightful recipe of soup flavors to appeal and satisfy the different needs and taste of all customers, both young and old, hence making them returning continuously. Because of their concept to offer various choices of soup flavors, iKar Restaurant's fish head noodles are cooked individually upon ordering, so as to provide customers with an excellent dining experience. Apart from the soup choices, customers can also opt for the type of fishes cooked using their most preferred choice.

The ingredients they put together are claimed to be the freshest and healthiest, making iKar Restaurant's fish head noodles an original, healthy and unique "Malaysian flavor", thus their tagline, "Deliciously healthy". – Copied and edited from Ikar Official Website

The picture is copied from iKar Restaurant's Facebook.

I was totally amazed by the fact that iKar Restaurant was once published on the newspaper, which the page was specially laminated and stuck nicely by the glass door at this particular brunch where I have been visiting repeatedly. It's my love for fish head noodles that brought me to this restaurant, and iKar Restaurant is the only place that serves the best fish head noodles I have ever eaten in my life so far.

Nonetheless, specializing in fish head noodles doesn't make their drinks significantly good. In actual fact, Don and I ordered a cup of drink merely to quench our thirst. Get it?

To be specific, it's a cup of Sugarcane Juice that tasted like some syrup.

As usual, with the number of flavors available on the menu, I was always in a hopeless tangle. I have always wanted to try some new flavors, yet I could hardly let go of my strong craving for my favorite Cheese Creamy Soup although oftentimes, my stomach would be pretty plump after meal. It's too heavenly delicious! Well, I could have gone for Curry Soup but Don disallowed, for my frequent back-to-back illness back then.

According to their website, the high content of calcium in cheese helps to strengthen bones and teeth, and prevent osteoporosis. It is also rich in Vitamin B, which is good for maintaining healthy and supple skin. High fat and proteins in cheese can help to gain weight. Uh, the last sentence is not needed. :|

Don had their Sweet Corn Creamy Soup, which was one of their new flavors introduced quite a while ago, other than Yam with Beet Root Soup, Tomato Soup, and Spicy Hot and Sour Soup. My first experience with Sweet Corn Creamy Soup was not really pleasant. It was almost tasteless. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the chef, or they have improved, Don's was really yummy with strong corn fragrance.

Other than the wide variety of soup flavors offered, another best thing about iKar Restaurant is that you can pick some of the main ingredients from the lists given. Don and I opted for thick noodles, and we would never love to get our dories fried for its original juiciness. Undeniably, iKar Restaurant serves all of my favorite in a huge bowl whenever I crave them all!

Favorites Ice Cream Agepan from Cornet, Sunway Pyramid

A day before I departed to Genting Highlands with Don for a short getaway, we went all the way to Sunway Pyramid to hunt films for my camera that is yet to be shown to everyone. As soon as we arrived at the mall, I remember telling Don that I will diet to lose weight after consuming huge amount of food within three months. However, half way through shopping, we stopped at Cornet for an ice-cream each. There goes my words said previously. Hah!

Apparently, that's how the process goes. Pick your most preferred flavor, choose between agepan and cup, pay for your dessert, and that's it. For your information, agepan is literally bun shaped like a cone, and deep fried with boiling oil upon ordering to form a crispy outer layer for better taste between hot and cold. I didn't like the idea though, because our agepan had rather strange taste, probably due to the oil used repeatedly.

Still, I can't deny the fact that serving an ice-cream in such a way helps to provide convenience to the customers, allowing them to eat while they walk around the mall.

You're of course allowed to try the different flavors of ice-cream they have to offer. I chose Espresso and Don selected his favorite Coconut. Personally, the Espresso tasted just like any other coffee-based ice-cream that was a little too sweet for my liking. With such quality, it could have cost so much lesser than the amount we paid. Conversely, the Coconut was awesome, to the extent that I nearly wanted to throw mine into the dustbin and snatch his away. :P

If I were to visit the same place again, which is quite unlikely that I ever would, I am sure I will not opt for agepan anymore. It tasted weird, and it’s extremely oily. It's a bread or a bun that didn't taste like one. Would I ever go for their ice-cream again? Hm, let's see.

Double Date at Dubu Dubu SEOUL Food, Berjaya Times Square

UPDATE:

People who have worked together with me should have seen or felt how particular I could be whenever it comes to assignments and projects. You will be easily accepted if you are serious and hard-working, whereas you could be eliminated from the group if you aren't, unless you back out voluntarily. Still, some people simply love to go beyond my limit over and over again and neglect or even forget about their own responsibilities. To make things worse, it's merely the second week of the semester. Dafuq?!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was the night after my actual birth date that my girlfriend, Farah, who just touched down in Kuala Lumpur International Airport in the beginning of March 2013 after approximately five months of being in Amsterdam, finally made it to meet me again at Berjaya Times Square. It was a simple yet meaningful dinner for my 21st birthday, with two of the most important humans in my life other than my family. Knowing that she craved badly for Korean food ever since she came back, the date was decided to be held at Dubu Dubu SEOUL Food.

Oftentimes, I would look at the price before I place an order, especially when I dine in at places normally meant for special occasions. The night was rather different than usual. I picked Iced Citron Tea that cost me freaking RM6.90 although I was very clear that I could make one of my own at home. If by any chance I could return to the place again one day, I would love to try out their Citron Dubu and Dubu Dubu Bingsu because desserts made with Korean tofu seem unique.

Iced Peach Tea at RM6.90? Their peach must be planted in somewhere special. Don and Farah claimed that it was good though.

At Dubu Dubu SEOUL Food, they serve toppokki, the Korean rice cakes, with a choice of spicy sauce or cheese. Typically, I would prefer the latter one because you could hardly find Cheese Toppokki being served at all Korean restaurants in Malaysia. Still, we ended up getting ourselves a plate of Spicy Toppokki to share instead, and I would leave the Cheese Toppokki for my next visit.

Don has always loved Korean marinated beef for the special sauce they commonly use. Thus, he had his Honey Garlic Bulgogi Beef Set, which the meat was grilled and infused with their Dubu Dubu honey garlic sauce, served together with a bowl of black rice and three side dishes, at RM20.90. You may always opt for chicken depending on your preference, and that's part of my plan!

Farah and I coincidently chose Soondubu Jigae Set with Chicken as our meal of the night, which it was literally a mixture of chicken and silky smooth tofu cooked in hearty broth to extract its wholesome flavors, served piping hot and steaming with fabulous aromas. Similarly, it came with a bowl of black rice and three side dishes. At RM15.90 per set, I thought it's still within the acceptable range.

Before any misunderstanding is arose, all the prices stated above are subject to 10% service charge and government service tax. Meh!

My overall dining experience with Dubu Dubu SEOUL Food was really good, except that the staffs should be more attentive to the guests and well-trained. It's quite ridiculous when the staff walked away right after we asked for bill, instead of informing us about what we should do, merely because we had to pay at the counter. Nonetheless, I will be sure to return to any outlets of Dubu Dubu SEOUL Food again for more interesting delicacies. Wait for me!

Vegetarian Lunch at San Sann Vegetarian Restaurant, Kuchai Lama

UPDATE:

Recently, I've been attacked by sore throat, followed by bad cough and heavy flu, with my body temperature changing inconsistently at night. The number of times I walked to the toilet or kitchen to blow my nose was countless, until I finally had a tablet of Tripolidine HCL and Pseudoephedrine given by my cousin brother. The effect was simply divine! Even though my nose still gets stuck from time to time, I can now officially breathe!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Based on my personal observation, part of the non-vegetarian Malaysian Chinese who believe in Buddhism (and perhaps Taoism, if I'm not mistaken) tend to practice abstinence from meat on the first and the fifteenth day of each lunar month. I admit that I, as a Buddhist who rarely practices what they normally do, have almost zero knowledge about the actual reason. Instead, I go for vegetarian meals whenever I wish to consume lesser meats, save cost in a way, or put myself on a vegetable diet once in a while. Apart from Fuguang Vegetarian Fast Food Restaurant that serves mixed rice at RM2, San Sann Vegetarian Restaurant in Kuchai Lama is now another favorite vegetarian place of mine.

I can't possibly provide you with an introduction about San Sann Vegetarian Restaurant, but the food selection is huge with good quality, from vegetarian mixed rice, to the typical Chinese single serving rice that will only be served at night (I'm not sure if they do in the afternoon, but they don't serve any of them in the morning) or noodles, to Nasi Lemak and Roti Canai. Believe it or not; this is probably the only vegetarian restaurant that I would be more than willing to come seven times a week, I swear.

According to Don, the one who introduced this restaurant to me, some of the drinks served can be too sweet or tasteless from time to time, especially tea, coffee, and anything of such. Therefore, we often share a cup of Soya Bean without ice, and get a pack of Iced Coffee at another restaurant after meal.

Assam Fish with Rice has always been one of Don's favorite dishes. Vegetarian fish fried together with okra, pineapples and tomatoes in Assam paste, it can sometimes be perfectly fine for a person who has a lower limit for spiciness like me, or overly hot and spicy. Nevertheless, our love for Assam Fish with Rice at San Sann Vegetarian Restaurant will never end, and the spicy food lovers should never miss this indeed.

To every vegetarian restaurant I go, I must try their Fried Oyster Mushrooms with Special Sweet and Sour Sauce for my crazy love towards oyster mushrooms. The one served at San Sann Vegetarian Restaurant, however, was slightly too sweet for my liking, which is why I decided not to order this over here ever since.

Besides, I would like to recommend their Vegetarian Nasi Lemak with finger licking good chicken, and extremely spicy sambal, a type of chili-based sauce popular in many of the Southeast Asian countries. Just a few days ago, when Don and I were at the restaurant, he mentioned that if it was my future mother-in-law who brought me here, she would highly recommend me their very own Roti Salad, which I'm still yet to try it out. It will happen soon, I guess!

Light Lunch at SYL Ipoh White Coffee Restaurant, Kota Damansara

UPDATE:

It's a mixture of sadness, depression, worry, hate, and all the affections. My friend, Steven Lim, whom we used to spend time together fooling around the places and studying for examinations, has gone missing since November 2012. It's published on social media, newspapers, and every possible places, yet nothing changed until recently when a murderer was caught for the crimes he had committed that Steven's wallet and identification card were found.

I don't know how I should feel about such shocking news anymore. I am merely looking forward to his return.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Braving the sweltering heat in an afternoon, Don and I grabbed the opportunity to finally travel all the way to Kota Damansara for a cup of Ipoh White Coffee. It was my idea to bring him for a good shot, after having been there with my mum and eldest brother for not more than five times.

Although my mum claims it to be similar to Kedai Kopi Sin Yoon Loong in Ipoh, I am not sure about the fact. No details of it could be found on the internet, or in the restaurant itself, including its business hours. Nevertheless, it is best to go for breakfast as they usually end their businesses in the early afternoon.

Their Iced Ipoh White Coffee may not be as thick as what Kedai Kopi Sin Yoon Loong has to offer, but it's definitely smooth and just fine to quench our thirst in the hot weather. Almost instantly, I felt as if the time tunnel had brought us back to our great moments in Ipoh.

Since it was a lighter lunch for me, I ordered Crispy Popiah to share with my hungry man. Wrapped with a piece of soft, thin crepe, the Crispy Popiah was filled with different ingredients that I couldn't recognize any, with turnips acting as an important character in providing us with juicy texture of it. It is always best to be eaten entirely at one go!

By the way, the stall offers Seaweed Popiah as well.

Don had a bowl of Noodles with Dry Chicken Curry. The noodles were literally soaked in curry with thick gravy. It was a little too spicy for my liking, but I am sure it would be almost or beyond perfect for any spicy food lovers. I guess it would be great to bring my dad for my next visit to SYL Ipoh White Coffee Restaurant, so as to introduce such delicacy to him.

It's known as SYL Ipoh White Coffee Restaurant for a reason! If Egg Toast is popular in Kedai Kopi Sin Yoon Loong, the one served at SYL Ipoh White Coffee Restaurant should never be missed. Poke the egg yolk with a fork, watch it flow on the toast, cut the toast into smaller pieces and eat it aggressively; are you drooling now?

I wouldn't say if SYL Ipoh White Coffee Restaurant could beat Kedai Kopi Sin Yoon Loong or vice versa. If you are hoping to try out Ipoh White Coffee, yet you have no ample time to travel hours away from home for a cup of it, then beyond doubt, SYL Ipoh White Coffee Restaurant would be the perfect place for your craving. Remember that it is best to visit this restaurant before noon!

Dinner at Wok Sifu, JUSCO Metro Prima

Happy April Fool!

It was a Tuesday night when my parents ditched me and Don for my dad's weekly routine in the park. My youngest brother and I tend to call it the session of being a Kung Fu Panda ever since I started to name my dad as the Big Fat Bear, a form of address literally translated from Mandarin, for no apparent reason. Hence, Don and I got our brains twisted to decide where to settle our dinner as usual.

It's the life of a Malaysian. Sigh.

We eventually dropped by Wok Sifu at JUSCO Metro Prima. Despite the past incident that took place at the exact location prior to its renovation, we decided to give it another shot. It is a restaurant that operates similarly to Wong Kok Char Chan Teng, which it comes with a slogan, "To taste Hong Kong, taste in Wong Kok".

Wok Sifu was promoting set dinner during our visit, valid from 6pm to 9pm. Each set meal came with a main meal of your choice from a list stated on the menu, and a cup of drink. By adding only RM1, you can easily enjoy an extra bowl of Mushroom Soup.

Don's Pork Dolsot Bee Beem Bab has a weirder name than how it usually is in most Korean restaurants, the bibimbap. It is a signature Korean dish that is literally translated as mixed rice, topped with several types of vegetables and it often comes together with gochujang, a type of Korean hot pepper paste in red. Honestly, though, the one served at Wok Sifu may be considered fine as a bowl of ordinary mixed rice, but it is far from being a Korean dish.

His set dinner came together with a cup of Iced Hong Kong Style Yin Yong, a mixture of coffee and tea, at RM16.50 per set, and a bowl of Mushroom Soup that popped out of nowhere without us being charged.

Many restaurants that offer Hong Kong cuisine tend to have huge variety of food on the menus, causing difficulty in choosing merely one every darn time. Thus, I had no choice but to go for my usual selection, the Cheese Baked Rice with Chicken Chop. I thought it was okay, without extraordinarily good or bad savor, except the fact that it's extremely filling for a smaller eater.

My set with a cup of Iced Hong Kong Style Milk Tea cost similarly as Don's, plus a bowl of Mushroom Soup that you could easily grab from the supermarkets and make one of your own at home.

In my opinion, Wok Sifu hadn't changed much ever since my second-to-last visit. Everything remained, and the prices were still within the range. Similar food of better quality with more affordable prices could certainly be found elsewhere. Perhaps it would be a great place to dine in at, only if you are out of some better choices for a meal.
